Comparative Assignment: Precedent Study and Analysis

This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas, through the study of existing buildings. Our given site is the Convent Bukit Nanas (CBN), located at KL. We are required to study the differences between CBN and our given historical era, which is the Gothic achitectural era.

The similarity between CBN and Gothic architecture are in pointed arches, buttresses, arcades, blind arcades (triforium), steep gable.

Difference in height: Gothic churches are built with a soaring height while CBN is not, as it is a school it has no need to be too high, as in the gothic churches height resembles their desire to reach heaven.

CBN is quite similar to the gothic architecture, with its key features present but somehow slightly modified to adapt to the Malaysian climate, its usage and other reasons. Its simplicity is caused by less skilled workers and architects in the country.

Prominent Gothic architectural features not present in CBN: Ribbed vaulting, flying buttresses, pinnacle, gargoyle, clustered piers and crucifix-shaped floor plan.
