THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM

This module requires us to carry out case studies, analytical research and literature review to improve our knowledge of the architectural and urban theories in the broader context of cities and streets, referring to the book "Life Between Buildings: Using Public Space" by Jan Gehl.

PROJECT 1

For this project, we are to read Jahn Gehl’s Life Between Buildings and subsequently, examine patterns of social activities in a city, which for my case, we got Senado Street, Macau, and identify ‘contact points’.  We need to classify the varying degrees of contact intensity along with the social activities happening around the street.

Part 2 of the project requires us to write a comparative analysis essay based on the findings from case study (Part 1) and local site research (Design Studio). we are to examine similarities and dissimilarities based on the patterns of social activities, types of ‘contact points’, and the varying degrees of contact intensity between the two cities.

Reflection

Throughout this project, I had a clearer and better understanding on how others utilize local materials to help the building fit in to the local context. The way of using the materials and also the idea of turning the old tiles into unique screening walls/facade is very innovative and inspiring, and the way they form the building based on the topography is also inspiring.
