Final Assignment A: Pamphlet

This is our last assignment for the ENBE module (Elements of Nature and Built Environment), and we had to go on a (or several) site visit(s) to our selected site in KL. After that, we would need to produce a pamphlet of A2 size, whether we do it one sided or double sided is up to us, and it must be folded in A4 size.

I chose the Pasar Seni site, as I went there before once and I loved it very much, and also because I like arts and culture, and I always loved the buildings there, their architecture gave me an unforgettable memory.

WEEK ONE

The first week:

I had decided on the site I wish to study and do my research on, which is Pasar Seni (Central Market). The reason why i chose this site is because that I went there before and I like it very much, It is great in the sense of culture, environment and its surrounding is full of different elements that I could explore.

Soon after I decide on the site, I went to do some research beforehand on google map and its official website. I had use the information found from them and coarsely decide on the area I wish to explore.

The location map by Google Map is also provided in Pasar Seni's official website, as well as the servies and facilities provided inside Pasar Seni. I will do further investigation and study on them as I visit the site later.

WEEK TWO

This was my original route plan, and while I went and visit Pasar Seni on 19th June, I followed 90% of it while additionally included the Flea Market of Petaling Street.

Within those circles drawn by a blue pen are the points that I

emphasize on, and I found out that their location are more or less the same as indicated in the Google Map (shown on the left), except that the Wisma Megah (located in the red box) that was previously occupied by Hong Leong Bank was now empty and currently not operational as Hong Leong Bank translocated to another location near Petaling Street.

The rough locations of shoplots along Kasturi Walk, Leboh Pudu and Jalan Tun HS Lee.

(Shoplots marked with V means that it is vacant.)

The only vacant lot along Kasturi Walk. From its name 恒栈, it would be an old Chinese hotel, probably abandoned. (栈 means hotel.)

It can be seen through its window, that it is half-demolished.

Maybe that's why it is vacant up till now.

Also, I found out that the Historic Triangle- Segi Tiga Bersejarah (highlighted in pink) is apparently the greenest spot in this area. It would be the green oasis in this city.

A shot of the Historic Triangle.

It makes a good place to rest and relax in the city as it is surrounded by plants and provides long benches to rest on.

Floor 1:The Ground Floor of Central Market (Pasar Seni).

Other than the main entrance and the back entrance, it consist of several other exits on the sides of the building.

The directory as well as the autopay station may be found on your left as soon as you enter through the main entrance, while on your right would be the info station where brochures regarding some of the shops and events happening there are provided.

The Ground Floor is made up of stalls that sell all kinds of things including souvenirs, clothes and accessories, religious items, etc.

Floor 2:The Mezzanine Floor of Central Market.

Through the stairs originated from the ground floor, you could reach the Mezzanine floor where you can find more stalls, more shops, more restaurants, and exclusively on this floor are a food court and also a Spa (Manjajaki Spa).

There is also exits from this floor that would take you straight to the outside of building.

There are also alot of facilities here to serve the need of safety and hygiene.

Found on several places are: the rubbish bin, recycle bins, fire hose, fire alarm, emergency alarm and fire extinguishers.

Other discoveries:

> An unusual balcony sticking out from the walls on Mezzanine floor which has no entry nor use for it.

^ A weird empty space beside the stairs, behind the shop lot 'My Little Borneo.com'.

v Batik sold at a shop here.

The Pamphlet

I started with producing my pamhplet, using photoshop and also by sketching. Stated in the brief, we are supposed to make an A2 sized pamhplet, either single sided or double sided, based on our studies on our site. Originally, I planned to do a single sided pamphlet, but I soon found out that it is not enough to fit in all my contents. Then I started the second side with the fear of insufficient content, but later it turned out that i have more content than enough to be fitted into two sides of A2 (which means 16 pages of A4), so in the end I still had to cut down some content. I worried too much.

I went for another site visit, to make sure that I did not miss out on any other details that I could think of, and started to sketch out the simplified map of my study area: Pasar Seni (Central Market).

The picture above is produced purely manually without editing, which green represents pavements, blue = green areas, yellow = parking lots, and others represents different types of streetlights.

> Different streetlights present in my area.

The picture on the left shows the road system in my area. Grey areas are only for pedestrians, green represents light traffic, blue represents moderate traffic, and pink represents heavy traffic, in relativity.

The one on the right is the land distribution of my area. They are mostly shoplots, with red being vacant, orange being commercial, yellow being parking lots, pink being restaurants, green being retail outlets or markets, blue for hotels or guesthouses, purple for religious buildings and finally, brown for educational buildings.

This picture is sketched by hand, and the colours are inserted using paint.

Below are the edited and completed version of my pamphlet. It has the size of two A2 as it is two-sided, which add up a total of eight A4 pages (we are required to fold our pamphlet to A4 size).

Reflection

Overall, I enjoyed my experience at my site. The only big problems there is the hot weather and the direct sunlight that made my skins burn, and made me sweat all over like I'm having a hot water bath. Some of the roads there have no greenery, and some roads are uneven and ruined. The road systems there are generally bad; it has messy roads and poor signage. I lost my way a few times there, and felt very lucky to have my phone with GPS on to show me the way.

I also enjoyed my time doing the pamphlet on late nights, powerpoint is powerful and I'm glad that I can complete my work within my expectations.

In this assignment, I had achieved TGC 8.1, to have effective use of ICT and related technologies. I searched for a lot of informations on google, such as history of the place, and of specific buildings. I also used Google Maps to aid in my wayfinding andalso navigation, as well as a reference to me. Myphone's job is to take pictures and record videos, and it did well for that. In creating my pamphlet, mainly I used powerpoint, but I also used paint to make some editing.

I had also used TGC 3.1, to think critically in situations. I need to think of the things I wanted to emphasize on, and plan my route and all that beforehand. Other than that, it is also not easy to plan the layout of my pamphlet and to search efficiently for useful informations on web.
