Assignment 2: Gazebo

This is our second project/exercise for the Design Studio II module, and it is a group project of 4 people which we are required to design two gazebos, one active and one passive defined by our own terms, at a given site: Taman Tugu national Park, located at KL. It is quite challenging because not only the design needs to be interesting but it should be possible to be built in actual too.

As our site is meant to honour our fallen heroes during the world war 2, we decided to design our gazebos in a way that could remind us of their sacrifice, and evoke a sense of patriotism of the general public and user of space.

We define the term passive as a peaceful relationship between gazebo and its surroundings, eg using the natural wind as ventilation, sunlight through filters to provide interesting shadings and shadows, the greeneries and landscape of site as its feature.
The passive gazebo, named "Jalur", uses a curtain wall facade that are that has rectangular, slim openings and surrounds the whole gazebo, as inspired by the motion of our national flag folding itself in the course of wind. The openings on the roof and curtain wall creates shadows of stripes on the gazebo, while also lightens up the space.

The roof plan and floor plan of the passive gazebo,"Jalur".

The benches in the gazebo is also designed to follow the linearity of the overall design, and at the same time provide a comfortable sitting area which offers flexible sitting positions for the users. As there are viewing points/areas located in several spots of the gazebo (spots beyond the big gap between roof and facade wall), the benches are placed carefully not to block these viewpoints.

For active, we define it as a relationship between the space (gazebo) and human. Ventilation and brightness can be controlled by user to the desired amount, by active mechanism which is the fins that also acts as the walls of the gazebo. The fins are placed between intervals of supporting columns, and the gazebo is partially submerged into the ground to have a shorter profile.
Our active gazebo, named "Gemilang" takes its form by the inspiration from the crescent and star in our national flag. The roof is formed by randomly intertwined stripes and form an angular shape that resembles the star in our flag. The crescent is one of the main supporting structure which supports the roof and also acts as roof above the pillars and fins.
