HUA SUEN
Assignment 1: Sketch & Render

This is our first assignment for the module (Design Communication), and it is an individual assignment. In this assignment, we are required to explore around our campus (Taylor's Lakeside), find a couple of great places (2 indoors and 2 outdoors) snap some photos with good angles, then get our hands on and sketch it out. It is also a must to render those sketches by various hatching methods to add texture and depth to our sketches.

The first place I chose is a computer lab or room somewhere in Block D. It has unique and colourfull furniture and the room makes people feel welcomed and cozy. The lightings are scattered and casts a lot of shadows underneath the furniture, so it was quite a challenge to sketch this. But I ended up not using this in submission as I did not think my first sketch is good enough for it. Nonetheless it was a great exercise for me to practice sketching.

I went on and found some other great places to start sketching. There was a cafe at block D, the outside of the library, and the interiors of the Culinary Art office.
The Cafe

The cafe sells food and beverages, snacks or lunch for both the students and lecturers. It is also a gathering place for us. there are a lot of chairs and tables, also a series of fluorescent lights and fans hanging above the head. The cafe has a warm and inviting aura and that is what I like about it, my main reason of choosing this place.
In my opinion, the hardest part of this is the amount of furniture I had to draw and the shadows cast on these furniture. There are also a lot of details on the counter and shelves as there are foods, appliances, containers and many more stuffs on it. Nonetheless I enjoyed very much sketching this photo and it is the one i liked the most.

Outside Library

The outside of the library is my second outdoor picture. It is also quite challenging as it has a lot of glass windows that are reflective to light and shadows, and at the same time it is transparent so I had to sketch out the things behind the glass windows too. there are also openings in the roof so light would come in through the aperture.
On the right is my sketch of the outsides of the library. I recognize my problem as my pencil marks are too shallow to see and my hatching are not dark enough to clearly indicate the depth of the photo. In my future sketches I will keep that in mind and improve my sketching or drawing skills as well as my rendering skills.

Interior of the Culinary Arts centre

The lobby of the centre is a space of modernism. The stage is of a capsule design that have a smooth and timber-like appearance, and the lights shed through the window over the window screen. There are loosely arranged coffee table and chairs in the vicinity. Openings on the wall acts as shelves to display awards and decorations.
On the right is the sketching of the small kitchen in the Culinary Arts Centre. There are counters, a small bar, fridge, coffee maker and a water dispenser in the space, and on the walls are cabinets and shelves. The hatching method used is scribbling.

Reflection
From this assignment I had learnt a lesson about time management. It is very important to keep track of our time and how to manage it properly to wield the best result from ourselves. I had also learnt to be more dareful in doing stuffs, not to be too hesitant but also not giving up of the small details in things.
