HUA SUEN
Assignment 2

This is our second assignment for the module, and it consist of two parts, group and individual. For our group section, our selected site is the Starhill Gallery. We went for site visit a few times, and studied about the materials used in the building, researched them and finally concluded them in presentation boards, and the study of ambience in a mood board. For the individual part, each of our members are required to select an individual site within the Starhill Gallery, which mine is the Village Bar, and to conduct our research on our sites and then conclude them in an A2 presentation board.

Starhill Gallery has a rock-crystalline facade, made with stone panels and tinted glass, which made its unique appearance stand out in the midst of a bustling city full of buildings and skyscrapers of all sorts. The glass facade is hold by lightweight steel frames, and it lets natural light into the building during the day, while filtering its immense heat. By being tinted glass, it also reduces glare, and looks comfortable.

Being a luxury shopping mall, its interior made heavy use of plastering and natural stone, and its ambience is grand, luxurious, and sophisticated.

Flooring, Walls

The Starhill Gallery features all types of flooring, with most being made from natural stone, it has a varying appeal and decorates different spaces with different effects. Most of them though, looks sophisticated and elegant, while some of them, decided by the needs of the space, are raw and natural.

The flooring of the upper floors of the building are mostly made of granite, being red, black, or white, and also marble, porcelain, ceramic, and travertine tiles.

At the ground floor, where the Feast Village is located, they used different style of flooring. Stone and pebbles are used, as well as bricks, and timber. According to different themes of the restaurants there, the flooring used are used to enhance the theme and thus the variety of materials.

Also, according to the themes of restaurants, the lighting and filters differ. Materials used as walls were also suited to the themes, such as concrete walls, brick walls, and such.

Individual Part:
Village Bar

The site I selected for my individual part is the Village bar. Its design relies heavily on glass, and uses glass not only for its appearance and reflective effect, but also its structural usage as load bearing columns, and also as furniture.

the village bar is of extravagant style, vibrant with a variety of glass lanterns that overhangs the space, and its colourful shines are reflected across the surface of the glasses all over the space. It is the multi-coloured glass that cretaes the chic and warm ambience of the space.
The Village Bar's design concept is to be a meeting place for either pre- or post-dinner drinks in an enticing and visually stimulating environment, where people can talk freely and socialize in a cozy place.

the main materials used in the Village Bar are glass, steel, bricks, and timber. Most of them have reflective properies, and those that do not are normally polished to have a smooth, glossy and slightly reflective surface, exceot for bricks and concrete which are used as flooring.
